FAQ-1515: Service not starting automatically

Description

Why doesn't the PlanetPress Workflow service start automatically when I reboot my computer?

Contents

Starting with PlanetPress Suite 7.5.1, a mechanism to detect virtual environments (Hyper-V, VMWare, etc.) requires that the Windows WMI service be started to provide information on the environment. However, on some systems, that service may not have completed its start-up procedure before PlanetPress Workflow launches its own service. As a result, only the PlanetPress Messenger service is started and PlanetPress Workflow must be launched manually from the Console or from the Windows Management Console. Note that this issue only occurs immediately following a reboot; after that, stopping and restarting the PlanetPress Suite services works properly.

To correct the situation, a dependency must be added to the PlanetPress Workflow service in order to instruct Windows to make sure the WMI serivce is started before it launches PlanetPress Workflow.

The procedure requires changes to the Windows Registry. If you are not comfortable making those changes, please have someone familiar with the procedure do it instead. In this instance the changes are non-instrusive and will not have any impact on the system except for specifying a load order for the services at boot time.

To do so:

Reboot the PC. The services will now all start properly.
