Add a New Custom Field

Custom fields, much like tags, are attributes that can be applied to different object types to personalize how PowerSteering appears to your users. Custom fields can be associated with Status Reports; whereas, tags cannot be.

  1. On the Icon Bar click the Admin button.
  2. Click Configuration to expand the menu, then click Custom Fields.

  1. Enter custom field information.
  2. Click Save.

Name: A name for the custom field.

Description: Text that describes the custom field's purpose (optional). If you enter text in this field, the custom field will appear with a yellow underline. Users can hover over the underlined custom field name to view the description text.

Administrators: Search for and select users or groups that will have permissions to edit your custom field (optional). Only users or groups with the Custom Field Administration permission can be selected for this field.

Type: The type of custom field. Each type may present additional options when selected.

  • Yes/No: Users will either select either a "Yes" or "No" radio button.
  • Date: Users will select a date.
  • Menu: Users will select a single value from a custom defined drop-down menu.
  • Number: Users are restricted to entering a number for this field. You further configure how many digits will be allowed on both sides of the decimal.
  • Percentage: Users are restricted to entering a number for this field which will be displayed as a percentage with the appropriate symbol. You further configure how many digits will be allowed on both sides of the decimal.
  • Monetary: Users are restricted to entering a number for this field which will be displayed as a monetary value with the appropriate symbol. You further configure how many digits will be allowed on both sides of the decimal.
  • Textfield: Users will enter free text. You further configure the maximum text length up to 10000 characters.
  • Checkboxes: Users will select check boxes next to a value or multiple values from a custom defined list.
  • URL: Users will enter a URL.

Apply permissions: This option is only applicable if the custom field is associated with people (Groups or Users). If the custom field is attached to user profiles, the Apply permissions option specifies whether the custom field is subject to user permissions settings. Specifically, if Apply permissions is selected for a user profile custom field, only users with the user permission Edit Custom Fields will be able to edit its value. If Apply Permissions is not selected for a user profile tag, any user with the user permission Edit will be able to edit the custom field's value.

Required (default): If selected, users will have to set a value for this custom field when they create an object that uses it.

Locked (default): Specifies whether a custom field can be edited. If selected, the work item’s Edit details page displays the custom field as read-only. This setting can preserve current custom field settings.

Work Types: A custom field can be associated with work.

Other Assoc: A custom field can also be associated with groups, issues, metrics, risks, users, or status reports. Select Metrics to add the Custom Field to the list of potential fields on the Custom Fields/Tags Metric Tab. For an explanation of custom field limitations, see section 3.1.

3.1 Custom Field Limitations

There are limitations to custom field settings if they are to be used as Metrics. Custom Fields cannot include the following settings:

  • Apply Permissions
  • Required (default)
  • Locked (default)

If any of these are active in a custom field, and it is selected as a metric, the user will receive an error message detailing which settings are not supported.
