Custom Permissions and the Work Tree

There are times when companies want to create separation between business units, divisions or geographic areas where they do not want users from one part of the company editing or even viewing projects that belong to another part of the company. In those cases you can apply custom permissions to a specific part of the Work Tree that differ from the permissions that were created for your PowerSteering site.

1. Custom Permissions

Custom Permissions

  • There are times when companies want to create separation between business units, divisions or geographic areas where they do not want users from one part of the company editing or even viewing projects that belong to another part of the company. In those cases you can apply custom permissions to a specific part of the Work Tree that differ from the permissions that were created for your PowerSteering site. Once applied by default the items that are descendants of that piece of the Work Tree will inherit those permissions. A black dot to the right of the item in the Work Tree denotes that a custom permission has been applied.

2. Inheriting Permissions

Inheriting Permissions

  • In PowerSteering the Work Tree represents a parent / child relationship between items and their descendants. By default, children will always inherit the permissions of their immediate parent. And if no custom permissions are set within your PowerSteering site, it can be assumed that all items in your Work Tree, and the descendants of those items, will have the same permissions across your entire site. If you update the controls of an item to NOT inherit custom permissions, that item will follow the default permissions for the PowerSteering site.

Note: If you have custom permissions settings on your Work Tree be very careful about moving items. If an item is inheriting their permissions from their parent that has custom permissions, and you move that item to a different location in the Work Tree, that item by default will inherit its new permissions from its new parent that may be different than its previous location.
