Setting up Server Administrator Secure Access

Administrators can set up full or limited Server Administrator Secure Access by creating groups, enabling secure access, requiring logon credentials, and applying the appropriate server access permissions.

Setting up Server Administrator secure access includes the following tasks.

Creating groups

You can create new or use current groups in the Server Administrator that represent the administrator or power user groups created in Active Directory Users and Computers for Windows.

To create groups

  1. Start the Server Administrator.

  2. Expand the Server Administrator tree, if necessary.

  3. Expand Configuration and right-click Groups. The Properties shortcut menu appears.

  4. Select New > Group. The Group > General dialog box appears.

  5. Type a group name and description in the Name and Description boxes.

  6. Click Add. The Add Group dialog box appears.

  7. Type the group name (created in Active Directory User and Computers) in the Enter the group name…. box and click Check Names. The Server Administrator checks to ensure the group and its members are valid.

  8. Click Finish.  

Note: Create an Administrator group with full access first and then create other groups as needed.

Enabling Secure Access

You can enable secure access by using the Server Properties > Settings dialog box.

To enable secure access

  1. Start the Server Administrator.

  2. Expand the Server Administrator tree, if necessary.

  3. Right-click the Server name that appears on the tree. The Properties shortcut menu appears.

  4. Select Properties. The Server Properties dialog box appears.

  5. Select Settings.

  6. Go to the Secure Access to the Administrator section.

  7. Click the Enable Secure Access button. The Enable Secure Access dialog box appears.

  8. Select the group to allow full access to the Server Administrator.

  9. Click OK on the Enable Secure Access dialog box.

  10. Click OK on the Server Properties dialog box.

Requiring logon credentials

You can require logon credentials after you have enabled secure access by using the Server Properties > Settings dialog box.

Administrator and power user groups must logon before accessing and using the Server Administrator when this setting is enabled.

To require logon credentials

  1. Start the Server Administrator.

  2. Expand the Server Administrator tree, if necessary.

  3. Right-click the Server name that appears on the tree. The Properties shortcut menu appears.

  4. Select Properties. The Server Properties dialog box appears.

  5. Click Settings.

  6. Go to the Secure Access to the Administrator section.

  7. Select Require Logon Credentials.

  8. Click OK.

Applying full or limited access permissions

You can apply full or limited permissions to the administrator or power user groups by using the Server Administrator > Group Properties dialog box.

Full Access permissions

To apply full access permissions

  1. Start the Server Administrator.

  2. Expand the Server Administrator tree, if necessary.

  3. Expand Configuration and select Groups. The Groups details pane appears.

  4. Select the appropriate full access group. The Group Properties dialog box appears.

  5. In the left pane, go to Administrator and select Access.

  6. Select all of the following permissions in the list.

    • Allow Viewing Documents

    • Manage Groups

    • Manage Secure Access Features

    • Manage View Documents Setting

  1. Click OK.

Limited Access permissions

To apply limited access permissions

  1. Start the Server Administrator.

  2. Expand the Server Administrator tree, if necessary.

  3. Expand Configuration and select Groups. The Groups details pane appears.

  4. Select the appropriate limited access group. The Group Properties dialog box appears.

  5. In the left pane, go to Administrator and select Access.

  6. Select the appropriate permissions in the list.

  7. Click OK.

The server processes group permissions in ascending order based on a group's location in  the Order column. Ensure  the Full Access Administrator  group is at the top of the list. Use the Group Properties shortcut menu to move groups up or down and modify the Order column as needed.

Disabling Secure Access

You can disable secure access as needed by using the Server Properties > Settings dialog box.

To disable secure access

  1. Start the Server Administrator.

  2. Expand the Server Administrator tree, if necessary.

  3. Right-click the Server name that appears on the tree. The Properties shortcut menu appears.

  4. Select Properties. The Server Properties dialog box appears.

  5. Select Settings.

  6. Go to the Secure Access to the Administrator section.

  7. Click the Disable Secure Access button.

  8. Click OK on the Server Properties dialog box.
