About Dialing Rules

A normalized fax number for an outbound fax may need modification depending on the location of the fax board and the location of the destination fax number. Dialing rules enable the Telco connector to modify the destination fax number automatically.

For example, if the location of the fax board is area code 603, and the fully qualified fax number for an outbound fax is +1 603-898-8900, the fax board does not need to dial 1+ 603 for a local call. A dialing rule enables the Telco connector to remove extra characters or add characters when necessary.

You may need to create dialing rules if your geographical region has special dialing conventions.

Information about dialing rules

Dialing rules consist of:

  • Information about the location of the fax board (country code and international access code)

  • Information on the way your phone system works (such as dialing prefix and suffix)

  • One or more area code rules

Default dialing rule for the Telco connector

When you add a Telco connector, you specify your area code. The Telco connector wizard uses this area code to create a default dialing rule for the new Telco connector. This rule enables the Telco connector to remove the area code from the destination fax number when the fax destination is in the same area code as the fax board.

Creating a dialing rule

You can create as many dialing rules as necessary for your messaging environment. When you create dialing rules, test them to verify that they modify fax numbers correctly. Then associate them with fax board channels.

Tip: You can add access codes and billing codes to dialing rules. This feature enables PBX devices to capture billing data.

You can create a dialing rule by using the Server Administrator > Connectors node.

To create a dialing rule

On the Start menu, click Upland AccuRoute > Upland AccuRoute Server Administrator.

  8. In the Dialing section, configure the following:

    • In the Prefix box, enter the digits that should be dialed before placing a call on the line connected to this channel (for example dialing 9 to reach an outside line).

    • You must add one comma after the dial prefix for each second the fax board should wait after dialing the prefix digit or digits before continuing to dial the fax number.

    • In the Suffix text box, enter the digits that should be dialed after placing a call on the line connected to the channel (such as PBX access codes).

Tip: You can also add access and billing codes to dialing rules.

  9. For Dial using, choose from the Tone (for push button dialing) and Pulse (for a rotary phone) option.
