Adding a Target to a Mailing
After creating a mailing or a simple send template, you will need to add a target audience using the targeting tab.
As a minimum, you must select a list using the list targeting options. You can then refine your target audience based on behaviors, etc.
Once you have defined your target audience, you can add content to your mailing.
Estimate recipients and export audience addresses
To estimate the size of the target audience based on your selected criteria:
-
Scroll to the bottom of the targeting tab.
-
Press the apply changes and estimate button.
To export the email addresses of a target audience:
-
Scroll to the bottom of the targeting tab.
-
Press the apply changes and export button.
-
In the pop-up window, choose if you want to:
-
Download the list as an Excel file from your browser.
-
Email the list as an Excel file attachment (enter separate email addresses with commas).
-
-
Choose the field delimiter for the file, e.g. comma delimited.
-
Press the export data button.
List targeting
Lists are subsets of your database that define mailing behavior and attributes. The lists tab allows you to create and manage your lists.
Available recipient lists for targeting are defined by the brand selected when creating your mailing and are displayed in the list targeting box.
If the list you need is not displayed, either:
-
Return to the general tab and change the brand for your mailing.
-
Update your lists to apply the correct brand to your list.
To apply a list or remove a list from your targeting criteria, either:
-
Double-click a list to move it between the available recipients box and the selected recipients box.
-
Select the lists you wish to add or remove and use the arrows to move the selected lists in the indicated direction.
Note: to ensure that each recipient only receives the mailing once when multiple lists are selected, PostUp will remove duplicate records from the audience.
You may wish to set a list precedence for recipients who appear on multiple lists.
-
Set a confirmation status for the recipients on your list.
-
All recipients - all addresses contained in the list are included in your target audience.
-
Confirmed recipients only - only addresses that are flagged as confirmed, e.g. via the double opt-in process, are included in the target audience.
-
Unconfirmed recipients only - only addresses that are flagged as unconfirmed are included in the target audience.
-
-
If you wish to use the list without further targeting criteria, press the apply changes button and then use the next button to proceed to the content tab.
If you wish to refine your target audience, continue adding other targeting criteria, e.g. segment your target audience with attribute targeting.
List precedence
If selecting multiple lists, you may wish to define the list precedence. List precedence defines the value of [-LISTID-] for recipients on multiple lists.
By default, list precedence is the same as the sorting order for list ID, e.g. if you want a participant that is on List-A (ID=1001) and List-B (ID=1002) to be identified as on List-B for the purposes of your mailing:
-
Check the list precedence check box.
-
Press the list precedence button.
-
In the pop-up window, use the up and down arrows to change the precedence of a list.
-
Press the OK button when your lists are in the desired order.
Targeting a mailing - refining your target
After you have selected a target list, you can refine your targeting criteria by:
-
Using attribute targeting to refine based on recipient characteristics in your database, e.g. location.
-
Using behavioral targeting to refine based on a recipient's previous activity, e.g. clicked a link in a mailing.
-
Applying a mailing size limit to refine based on sending a fixed volume of mailings.
-
Adding suppression criteria to exclude recipients based on lists, policies, etc.
